Whack-A-Mole

Image
Today I was greeted with another Discord direct message scam with a very similar format to the one posted yesterday. The Discord user is different but the wording is the same, and it points to a different site.  Instead of hxxps://guildofguardians-air[.]com, this one points to hxxps://give-guildofguardians[.]com. The site was still up today and it looks to me like this is some kind of crypto scam template, as it has very little Guild of Guardians specific branding. As an added touch, near the bottom of the page there is what looks like the list of transactions from Etherscan for some wallet, that keeps updating to give the visitor the impression that people are making transactions.  It's meant to give the site credibility and increase the fear of missing out. Digging into the site source there is a reference to a "real-address", 0x43f0b1776E029bc04CDf03BFa2Fb5f5f9721DC23, which appears to be associated with the scam.  I tagged it as a scam in etherscan. So far it looks li

Success Against Scammers

Image
This morning I received another discord direct message scam.  It was a fairly obvious one, announcing a fake guild of guardians airdrop. This afternoon I decided to fire up my Kali Linux VM to take a look at the site and see if there was anything interesting about it, and how it compared to other scams before.  Lo and behold the domain was already suspended! This is really refreshing and demonstrates just how committed the Guild of Guardians community is to protecting each other from scams.  I've seen brands have to wait days or weeks before getting a site taken down, and this one was down in less then a day. Whoever was responsible for getting this site taken down quickly, you are my hero today.

Example Scam Websites

Image
In the last few posts I looked at two scammer websites in particular, but there are more out there and plenty more to come as Guild of Guardians gets closer to it's release date. You might be asking yourself how there can be so many scam sites. The bar for creating a website is so incredibly low that just about anyone can do it quickly and cheaply. There are so many domain endings available now that scammers have lots of options starting with "guildofguardians" and defensively registering them all can be quite costly. Looking at Google Domains there are something like 200 available domains for purchase.  The unavailable ones are the ones I'm interested in though, and here is a sample of them that are already serving up scam sites. DO NOT VISIT THESE SITE, THEY ARE SCAMS .  This list it provided just to help educate the community as to how similar the links can look to to the official site. guildofguardians[.]net guildofguardians[.]cc guildofguardians[.]tech guildofgua

GuildOfGuardians[.]net: Scammer ETH Addresses

Image
Etherscan is your friend. If you're new to Crypto you may not have spent much time on the various blockchain explorers, but they are very handy when you want to understand where your funds are going when you send them to an address. https://etherscan.io/ You can take any address and double check that it looks legitimate before you transfer funds.  For example, this is the contract address for the GoG token: 0x9AB7bb7FdC60f4357ECFef43986818A2A3569c62 If you search for that address on Etherscan (https://etherscan.io/token/0x9AB7bb7FdC60f4357ECFef43986818A2A3569c62) it will look like this:  The Token is called Guild of Guardians (although that title could be faked), the supply is 1,000,000,000 GoG which is what I expect based on the Guild of Guardians whitepaper, there are 1,811 holders (I expected more actually) and there have been 8,139 transfers.  You can also take a look at the transfers down below and there are some from SushiSwap: GOG, CoinList, and if you own GoG your address w

GuildOfGuardians[.]net : Yet Another Imposter

Image
Caution: Before you connect your Metamask wallet to a site, check three times it's an official site for the project from multiple sources. Came across this site today, hxxps://guildofguardians[.]net.  This is yet another fake website that attempts to impersonate Guild of Guardians. This is a particularly scary site as it offers the ability to connect your wallet to the site.  It's also been around since September 2021 according to domaintools.com. The branding is very similar to the actual Guild of Guardians site, and a lot of imposter sites will grab assets from the real page. Notice the buy heroes, buy pets and energy and buy guilds buttons all look very similar to the actual site.  However, some of the red flags include: Not in the Official Links channel on the Guild of Guardians discord The price for GOG is way off (1 GOG is currently worth more then $0.1) It mentions VR/AR which isn't on the actual GoG roadmap When you refresh the page the timer resets back to 13 hours

The Discord DM Scam

Image
This scam is certainly not specific to Guild of Guardians, but rather very common once you start joining various Crypto related discord servers.  It was especially bad right around when the GoG token was scheduled to to go on sale. The scam starts with a direct message on Discord, which is why you'll see a lot of discord community admins post "WON'T DM YOU". If you ever get a direct message that seems to be from GoG pause for a minute and ask the following questions: Was I expecting this message? Is there a sense of urgency along with the message? If there is a link involved, is it in the "Official Links" channel on the GoG Discord? This scam is usually attempting to prey on a victim's fear of missing out, like you might miss your chance to purchase GoG tokens before everyone else. The Guild of Guardians team will never DM you for a promotion and will never DM you with a link, so you will not miss out on anything by ignoring DM's that appear to be fr
